PLOVDIV CITY INDUSTRIAL ZONES
In the late fifties of XX century in Plovdiv, as well as in the entire country, began vast industrialization of the economy by extension of the town territory and foundation of manufacturing enterprises in these peripheral zones. A functional division of the territory was performed during this period, forming particular industrial zones (zone North, zone South, etc.) jointed to the existing town. A. Zone “North” with predominant sectors – food and light industries (textile plant, sugar plant, canning plant).
B. Zone “South” with key sectors – machine building, metal processing, instrument building (forklift trucks building plant, vehicle repair plant, electric appliances building plant, etc.)
C. Zone “East” – enterprises, specialized in light industry, construction, and storage (shoe plant, house building plant, etc.).
D. Zone “South-East” with predominant sectors – fine machine building, electronics and peripheral equipment (plant for memory storage devices, typewriter plant, etc.)

Zone “South-East” with predominant sectors – fine machine building, electronics and peripheral equipment (plant for memory storage devices, typewriter plant, etc.) The industrial terrains are insured with the necessary infrastructure, premises, railroad connections and water and power supply. For the period of almost 40 years, the development of the production activities is a base and leading factor for the growth of the town. The main part of the investments and efforts are orientated at this direction and the other urban factors play supporting and subordinate part. Unfortunately, from the nowadays point of view, it is obvious that the whole industrial infrastructure in these zones is not effective, with high energy consumption, wasteful to some extent and the manufactured products is not competitive, without realization on the markets. The collapse of the economy put the question – what to be done with these terrains and infrastructure.
